My Students

I am the intervention specialist in a second grade full inclusion classroom. Not only do I co-teach in the classroom, I also manage the IEPs and goals of the nine students with disabilities. In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students. More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. Even with these barriers, this does not stop my amazing students from coming to school eager and anxious to learn and be the best they can be!

My students' disabilities range from mild to intensive, so I strive to make sure all of my students learn, no matter their ability level, in this setting.

There is a lot of differentiated teaching and learning going on throughout the day to make sure I am meeting the needs of all of the students. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn. My goal is to set them up to be independent, contributing members to society in the future!

My Project

This year our amazing students had the opportunity to raise mealworms. When they first heard that they were going to be mealworm mommies and daddies, they were ecstatic! Each student received two larval mealworms and was asked to build a habitat using vials and other STEM resources from our Makerspace that would support their wants and needs. Over 10 weeks, our students observed the larvae grow, molt, pupate, and turn into adult beetles. They then mated, laid eggs, and after some time, either died or we would humanely euthanize them by putting them in a bag in the freezer.

Additionally, our students had another amazing opportunity to study and nurture another insect - the painted lady butterfly.

Our students observed the states of complete metamorphosis and how insects cause changes to the environment through pollination. The students learned the phenomena of pollination and the important role insects play in the life cycle of flowering plants.

These firsthand investigations were magnificent learning experiences for our students that were so hands-on and meaningful to them! With all of that being said, these living creatures required a great number of resources. Our painted lady caterpillars came with culture medium food that required refrigeration. Once they transformed into butterflies, we fed them fresh fruit like oranges and cantaloupe. Our mealworms required fresh carrots and potatoes. Much of this fresh food needed refrigerated. While we strive to foster independence in our students, we often had to leave the classroom to get the food from the teachers' lounge. The Midea refrigerator would be a great addition to our classroom to store fresh food and also would provide a space to properly euthanize the beetles as we were informed that these insects could not survive in the wild after being raised in a lab.
