Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 7th and 8th grade Language Arts in a two year loop to students in a large urban city. The majority of my students live in a one mile radius of our campus, making this a true neighborhood school. Many of my students come from Puerto Rico, which means they are bilingual with Spanish being the primary language at home.

They are an amazing group of socially conscious young women and men, consistently seeking out opportunities to learn about issues presented in our community.

Most students began their journey with me one or more years behind grade level in reading. Over the past year the reading achievement gap has closed significantly with more than 85% of them seeing above average growth in their instructional reading levels. I anticipate continued success in this upcoming school year with my hardworking students.

My Project

With input from my students, I have selected two novels that I will be using in my class this year. "All American Boys" is a novel about race in America when a teenage boy witnesses a classmate's beating at the hands of a police officer. "Speak" chronicles the social and mental struggles endured by a teenage girl struggling to find her voice after a sexual assault at her high school.

These novels deal with the heavy subject matter that my students are confronted with on a daily basis.

Race, police brutality, sexual assault and social stigmas are all conversations that my students are having with their friends on a regular basis. By reading these novels as a class we can explore these complex and emotionally fraught ideas in a safe classroom environment. Furthermore, these novels are also told from the perspectives of both male and female narrators, giving my young women and men insight into how gender roles can affect how they see the world.

Young Adult Literature that appeals to their personal lives and struggles are a powerful way to engage them in the love of reading while simultaneously discussing the world around them.
