As a teacher, I’m always seeking new ways to reach and support every learner in my classroom. With this project, I hope to receive a set of professional development books that will help me grow in areas such as mathematical discourse, conceptual understanding, math workshop strategies, and meeting the needs of diverse learners for my first year of teaching 5th-grade math. These books are written by expert educators who have years of research-backed insights and classroom-tested strategies.
These books will deepen my understanding of how students build math knowledge and help me design more engaging, student-centered lessons; I’ll explore new methods for making math instruction more equitable, develop stronger questioning techniques, and enhance my assessment practices to better gauge true understanding.
Whether it's launching small-group lessons, encouraging students to explain their reasoning, or using number talks effectively, these texts will equip me to take my teaching to the next level.
My students will benefit from lessons that are more thoughtfully planned, more responsive to their needs, and more focused on deep understanding, not just getting the right answer. I’ll be able to support struggling learners with targeted interventions and challenge advanced thinkers with open-ended tasks. I want every student to feel confident in math, and with this professional development, I’ll be better prepared to help them see themselves as capable, powerful mathematicians.
