This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have an inquisitive group of middle school students who love to see how and why things work. Many of them need help relating education to their "real" world. They do not yet see how education and problem solving will help them in the future because they are in the moment of now. My goal is to change their view of education and encourage problem solving.

Our school population is 95% Hispanic, with nearly 48% being English Language Learners (ELL).

Families and teachers prepare students for the pathway to college and career which is key for our students. The average income for residents within the school's zip code is significantly less than the state's average.

My Project

During the 6th grade, students explore the patterns of multiples. They review the concept but then dive into the mathematical uses for problem solving using multiples. Unfortunately, many students struggle with applying multiples into problem solving. When they struggle through this important concept without fully understanding what they are doing, it hinders them academically in future math classes.

My students will apply and increase their knowledge of multiples in a culturally relevant way, for many Latinos, by playing weekly domino matches.

By providing these sets of dominoes for the students, you will be providing them an engaging way to learn.
