This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students' minds are sharp; please help make their pencils sharp too!

My students are an exciting and dynamic group of 6th graders from a charter school in the South Bronx.

They arrive to school at 7:25 am and leave at 5 pm. Each and every student works extremely hard and are motivated to succeed. The students get between 2-3 hours of homework each night, go to school 2 Saturdays a month, and go to school in July.

My Project

With a heavy-duty pencil sharpened, less time will be wasted and there will be extra time for the students to practice their computational and problem-solving skills. If pencils breaks during class (which they always do), students will no longer need to search their bags for pencils, interrupt a teammate to ask for a pencil, or have to waste time trying to slowly sharpen their pencil with a little personal sharpener. The classroom will be neater (no pencil shavings on the floor from the handheld sharpeners) and less time will be spent getting another pencil sharpened to do work.

Imagine a copier machine that has barely enough toner.

A car that doesn't have enough oil to run smoothly. A windshield that was clean enough to see through, but still dirty enough to drive not drive comfortably. My students would greatly benefit from an efficient pencil sharpener. Their work will be neater, they will spend more time on-task, and their minds will be "sharper". :-)
