Our students are ready and willing to take on the challenges of the common core mathematics content. They have many diverse styles of learning and need to experience mathematics beyond the traditional lecture. They need exposure to 21st Century learning that encompasses higher-order thinking activities based on real-world math. They need to collaborate with their peers and learn how to take the lead during mathematics discourse.
We teach math to a student population that is 95% African-American, 2% Haitian-American, 2% Hispanic and 1% Caucasian with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
As the group of education professionals given the charge to prepare our students for real-world mathematics, we must be prepared to implement the instructional shifts required to provide a rigorous education in common core math.
My Project
The success rate of our students on state assessments in mathematics needs improvement and to get them to mastery of the state's mathematics standards, we must eliminate the gaps in learning. To eliminate the gaps in learning, we as educators must improve our instruction to meet the needs of our students by decoding the mathematics standards. Decoding the standards into actionable steps for math skills attainment will help us cover all of the content necessary for student mastery.
One of the best methods to grow professionally is to actively participate in a professional learning community of mathematics instructors.
In this learning community, we will decode and discuss the best methods for teaching the standards using the Common Core mathematics books. Using the markers and easel pads, each participant will create an anchor chart and discussion questions for a selected topic and facilitate the team's collaborative discussion regarding the topic. The binders will be used to house lesson plans and handouts from the meetings. The post-it flags will enable participants to readily access key points/documents in the mathematics books and lesson plan binders.
As we share and implement best practices in mathematics instruction, our students' performance on standards-based testing will improve. By having a comprehensive understanding of the common core mathematics standards and how to teach them, we can truly help our students master the content.
