A Math Boost That Values Time (Place Value And Time!)
My students need visual aids for mathematics, including a place value pocket chart, a regrouping activity chart, a hundreds pocket chart, and model clocks for telling time.
Math concepts such as place value, counting, and telling time can challenge children, but don't have to with the right learning aids! I teach 20 second graders in a public school, most of whom are low-income.
My students are largely a high-need population - a combination of immigrants, homeless, and military children. They are at an extremely literal age whereby concepts such as place value, regrouping, and telling time elude them. In order to grasp such high-leverage math concepts, my students must be able to latch on with manipulatives that they can touch and connect with kinesthetically.
I need a few essential teaching aids that will give my students the extra boost they need in achieving learning goals such as telling time and distinguishing hundreds from tens and ones. Visual charts and manipulatives will enable them to learn number patterns, understand numeration up to 100, maneuver their own sample clock, and begin to grasp those key second grade math concepts.
Your support will make it possible for my students to touch, feel, and play their way through counting, understanding place value, and telling time. Instead of merely filling out boxes in their math workbooks, my students will be able to problem solve in pairs and in groups. They will see skip counting patterns on the hundreds chart you will have helped purchased. These second-graders will group hundreds, tens and ones, and they will count out the hours and minutes on the individual learning clocks that we would not otherwise have access to without your help.
