Help me give my students STEM materials for a Makerspace including Osmo kits, a Makey Makey, LEGOs, and a Marble run to help them explore engineering and the creative process.
I have a very diverse group of learners. I am the librarian at two low-income schools with 85% free and reduced lunch. This diverse group of students come from bilingual households, struggle with language at school, live in high poverty/low-income households, and have various reading levels. However, these students also want to learn. I work hard to build a love of reading with my students. I teach 40 classes each week between the two schools. Materials purchased for the library benefit all kids in the schools.
I work hard to provide equitable resources they may not otherwise receive, usually high-interest literature, but I am currently building a "Makerspace" for the students to challenge themselves through critical thinking and problem-solving.
I am excited to challenge students and have them be engaged in creative problem-solving to help them be more connected to learning in their regular classrooms as well.
My Project
A Makerspace has students use STEAM concepts to experience hands-on learning. Makerspace gives students the tools and materials to create projects that build on learning, allowing them to use their creativity to show their understanding of a concept, topic or idea. Makerspace allows for creative problem solving challenges such as building the straw rocket that will go the farthest, coding challenges to solve problems or get a specific destination. They also encourage tinkering, creating, problem solving, and encourage learning from mistakes and trying again. We are just starting our Makerspace. I am trying to stock it with supplies, and coding materials including legos, Makey Makeys, Osmos, a marble run, etc. I am excited to have students engaged in creative problem-solving.
I am creating a Makerspace to bring kids students to the library to explore engineering and the creative process, because the library should be a hub of a school.
With a Makerspace area, students can invent, collaborate, build, create, code, and problem solve.
Makerspace allows students the opportunity to think and grow as a learners.
Makerspace helps students become 21st century ready by preparing them to become innovators: the value of hands-on projects where students have to solve a real world problem; the importance of learning to draw on academic content from multiple disciplines to solve a problem; learning to work in teams is more important than ever before.
