Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach a dynamic group of fifth grade students from diverse backgrounds. Each year, my students have so much to bring to the table and they love to share their interests and strengths with each other! We do collaborative, student-led group projects on a weekly basis and we really love to explore in STEM. We work really hard to learn effective communication and teamwork skills that we use to reach our learning goals.

Some of our favorite learning time is when we do hands-on work using math manipulatives, working to plant and maintain our school gardens and completing engineering design challenges.

We love to fill our book bags with just-right books that help us take adventures and fall in love with new characters!

We work really hard everyday to prepare for social and academic life after elementary school.

My Project

These materials from this project will be used to create a makerspace for STEM learning at our school. We have a science lab that is ready and waiting to be turned into a STEM laboratory where my students will be able to engage in hands-on activities that promote student driven collaboration, exploration and learning! With these materials, we will be able to design and engineer structures, create our own stop motion movies, learn how to code and use coding to program robots! Once we learn the activites in our STEM makerspace, we will have the opportunity to mentor other students in the use of these materials. Our materials contain a variety of levels that will allow us to open our space and share our learning with scientists as young as 5 years old!

We are so excited to have these STEM materials that will help us engage in 21st century learning and prepare us for college and future careers in science, technology, engineering and math!
