Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help soothe my students' tooshies. My students move around in the classroom instead of sitting in their desk all day. Moving closer to the smartboard helps them to get a break from their desk, and is a motivator to staying focused. However their bums get sore on the hard floor.

My students are bilingual Hispanic kids that are in a gang infested neighborhood.

Many of my students are on their way themselves. They come from low economic families in which brings about a bad home-life for many of my students. All my students are on the free lunch program as well as a part of the food bank program. These programs are great for my kids. Without them they might not have the food to eat at home. These are good kids with bad circumstances. Our school is a title one school that is not achieving in our test scores. I am trying to help motivate and encourage my students to the best that I can. School should be a number one priority and many don't care because they believe their life's path has already been chosen. It is my job to instill good character qualities and values that are missing in their lives. I try to provide a comfortable and inviting environment for my kids to help them succeed and believe that their education is important.

My Project

Having a large classroom carpet in my classroom will not only provide an inviting environment conducive to learning, but it could be used as a teaching tool. Social Studies is a subject that is not really taught in my school. We are to busy with increasing test score in reading and math. We are encouraged to focus on interventions for these subjects and not teaching the social sciences. I believe this is hurting our future. These Hispanic students need to learn about the country in which they are living. I want to try to use the carpet as a tool to take a few minutes of my day to teach them about our country. I would also like to provide comfort for my students as we usually sit on the hard floor in front of our smartboard to do our lessons. I like to have my students moving around so they do not get restless.

I know a carpet does not seem important in a classroom, but this particular one with the states on it can provide a resource to me to help my Hispanic students learn the states in our country.

Everyday we sit on the floor to do our lessons. With this carpet it will make my students learn without them even knowing it. I can guarantee my students will know all 50 states in America before leaving my class that isn't allowed to teach Social Studies.
