I work in a public school that has 96 languages represented. My students come from a multitude of school experiences. I teach first grade. My students range in ability level from non-readers to 4th grade level readers. The range of learners is a constant challenge as are the socioeconomic status. Many students have resettled into our community and they are anxious to begin their educational experience. My commitment is to provide a welcoming, safe space for learning, collaboration, creativity, communication and recognition that we are global citizens which have rich experiences to share!
I've been teaching over 7 years. I was fortunate to have a retiring teacher friend hand down her carpet after 10 years of service to her!
After 17 years of service, our classroom carpet deserves to retire!
My students have carpet time for whole group lessons and frequently use the carpet area for free reading time. You will find my students using a lapdesk with magnetic letters and trays creating their sight words and practicing phonics skills every day, not to mention all the math center practice in small groups that takes place on the carpeted area. With the advent of tile in the classroom, the need for a comfortable place to work around the room is even more critical. I've cleaned my existing carpet many times and tucked under the extra threads. I don't think I can duck it much longer!
