My students do not get enough exposure to high quality, high interest nonfiction reading materials. This project will provide them with these materials and allow them to take them home to share with family members.
My first graders attend an inner city public school in Cleveland, Ohio.
The are very eager to learn to read. They are attracted to colorful and inviting reading materials. They will be excited to receive a magazine every week that is colorful, interesting and engaging. They will be anxious to take it home to share with all the members of their family. Nonfiction materials that are written for first graders are not easy to find. Scholastic News Magazine and Science Spin will provide them with exposure to a wide variety of new topics. The students will be learning new skills and it will be fun and interesting to them.
My Project
My students will utilize the Scholastic News Magazine and Science Spin activities to discover many new topics in the areas of science and social studies. These magazines are full color with vocabulary words and new information on a variety of topics every week. The difficulty level will increase every week as my students are becoming more proficient readers. The magazine will also allow me to focus on an English Language Arts standard that is spotlighted in each issue. Our subscription will allow us access to Scholasticnews.com. The students will be able to practice their reading on digital issues of the magazines, watch highly engaging videos and play rigorous skill games that relate to the weekly topic. The students will take the magazines home and reread them to their family members. This will provide more reading practice and exposure to the topic of the week.
Donations to this project will provide my inner city students with a reading magazine that they can call their own.
They will learn and enjoy while reading. They will be excited to go home and share their magazine and what they learned. This will help them to develop a love for reading and learning that will carry them through the year. Scholastic News will expose my students to many new topics. My children will be better readers and learners after using these resources.
