My Students

“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel.” Socrates. Help me kindle positive self-esteem in my students! They are a group of vivacious learners, but they don't know it yet. It is my goal to get them to believe in themselves despite the disability/challenges they have.

As a Title I math teacher, I work with students in need of remediation.

Most of my students have learning disabilities or find learning math concepts to be challenging. By 3rd and 4th grade, many of them have quit believing in themselves and have succumbed to becoming passive learners. It has been a long year, but I refuse to give up. I know I can get them to start finding success and to start believing in themselves again. My students learn best through high interest activities, such as hands-on investigations and interactions with manipulatives and games. I would love to offer such experiences through intervention lessons offered during their lunch period. This is a time period that can be utilized, to reinforce skills taught in the classroom and to turn my students into active participants. What better way to enjoy lunch, than with friends and exciting activities! I truly believe that this opportunity will provide them a chance to learn in a "less intimidating" environment.

My Project

My students need a complete set of Math Activity Stations, 8 interactive software games for whiteboards, & STEM kits for after-school/lunch programs, to boost math skills. My students will have the opportunity to eat their lunch in my classroom, while enjoying the company of friends, investing math concepts, and having fun while learning. For example, I can captivate student interest through a friendly competitive game of math plinko. Students can use the interactive software games to compete against each other while investing concepts such as place value, measurement, geometry, or operations. In addition, through the math activity stations I can provide high interest centers including topics of decimals, data, fractions, algebraic thinking, and math operations. For example, they can solve area and perimeter riddles, go on a deep sea shape dive, or embark on a multiplication safari where students have to solve facts to uncover a mystery safari puzzle picture. Lastly, I would love to offer an after-school workshop where students can investigate STEM real world design challenges such as building a robo-hand, fresh water filter, bridge,or do a well rescue!

My experience in teaching has given me the opportunity to witness reluctant students undertake unimaginable challenges when boosted with even a little bit of confidence.

I would love to use these materials to embark on a new learning adventure with my students and give them a new opportunity for understanding math concepts. Also, with my position of being the math specialist, I work with all students K-4, so the materials will be used beyond this program and be available to all students.
