A Lovely Place to Read

My students need appropriate level fiction and nonfiction books for our classroom library, as well as comfy beanbag chairs to read on.

My Students

Imagine walking into your new classroom on the first day of third grade. Your teacher tells you to pick out a book and begin reading. You look around your classroom library and realize that all of the books are too hard! A lump begins to grow in your throat...

This is the situation that many of my third graders could face this year.

I have been teaching fourth grade, so my classroom does not have enough books to suit the third grade students that I will be teaching this year. My school cannot afford to buy books for my classroom, as the administration must spend most of its money on math, reading, spelling and handwriting workbooks. I want all of my students to feel inspired by the books in our class library, but I can't afford to replace all of the books myself. I teach in a progressive public school in urban New York State. My students are exceptionally diverse - racially, ethnically, socioeconomically, and in terms of their learning abilities.

My Project

Every year we try to teach how reader's workshop time should look, feel and sound. We want the students to respect one another as they immerse themselves in the books they are reading. However, it is hard for these kids to feel excited about reader's workshop when they can't find books that they want to read. This is why it is so important for my class to get these new, third grade friendly books. I've included two beanbag chairs in this grant as well, to offer more comfy reading spots to my class. Like most grown-ups, many of my students prefer not to read sitting upright at desks. I have included many nonfiction books in this grant, both because the children love them and because they are a cornerstone of the new national Common Core Standards in language arts. In addition, many of my students come from homes with virtually no books. These same kids often have parents too busy, to take them to the local public library.

I allow my students to take home any book that they are able to carry, and encourage them to read each book at home and at school until they finish it.

This helps motivate them to finish each book rather than abandoning it. Picture now a day months into the school year. The children return from lunch. It's reading time. They happily pull out their books from cubbies and backpacks. They recommend books to each other and plan their next books! Help make this image a reality for my class.
