Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students want what we all do--a safe home, good friends, good health, opportunities to learn and grow, and the chance to make a difference in the world. They come to me from over twenty countries, speaking a dozen languages. Despite their differences, they all speak the universal language of science. They are fascinated as I am at the power of science to uncover truths hidden in plain sight, and its power to improve our environment, our health, and quality of life.

My Project

Birds are a gateway to understanding our environment. While most of us start out being "bird-blind" to these amazing creatures around us, anyone can easily become a birder. Just as I get the lay of the land anywhere I travel - learning the people and landmarks of a new city - I also make sure I have my binoculars so I can learn the birds, as well. My students are new to our city, and I know they can become more at home if they observe its wildlife. Observing birds around us in our neighborhood, asking questions about what they've seen, and communicating their observations are not just activities restricted to birdwatching or travel. These are also the keys to scientific inquiry, as outlined by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Science and Engineering Practices. Birds are also easy to spot examples of adaptation and evolution, an NGSS Disciplinary Core Idea.

Binoculars are more than a tool, they are an open window to a world of discovery.

During an after-school club, I'll teach my students the basics of using binoculars, locating and identifying birds, as well as keeping accurate records that can be used by the citizen-science bird monitoring program, eBird.org. True love of science comes with time, repetition, and practice, so I don't want the science to stop after our one hour. Once a month, we will have weekend field trips to a birding hotspot in our great city. So students learn to explore on their own, these binoculars and field guides will be available for one week loans. Each week, when we meet back as a group, students will share what they've seen, answer one another's questions, and plan how to tackle new questions they have about birds and our local environment.
