My students need a classroom library full of exciting adventures with choices that meet each child's independent reading level! A comfy and intriguing spot to read these books only encourages the needed practice!

My Students
Our school is an innovative charter school in Connecticut. Community and compassion thrive in this place and students feel ownership and are empowered to make change. They have input into their own learning and are taught to reflect and make goals. At a very young age, students begin individual research projects which they teach to their peers. Our classrooms are multiage and my room is composed of second and third graders.
One of my most important jobs as a teacher is to foster a love of reading!
At this age children are building their reading skills and strategies while strengthening their comprehension of text. They love to look at a new book, even if they can't read it yet! I want to encourage this as much as possible in order to develop lifelong readers!
My Project
Everyday the students in my class get the chance to read books of choice. In second grade students are just learning how to choose a book that is just right for them, not too easy but not too difficult. A leveled library guides their choices and offers a variety of topics that may interest each child. By the time they leave my room, my hope is that each student can make good independent book choices.
A classroom library is the cornerstone of a great elementary classroom.
I want students to be drawn to this area just by looking at it. A comfy spot to curl up and get lost in a book creates a space that will be used over and over again!
