Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a teacher at an East Oakland school named Monarch Academy. We are a charter school and therefore create our entire curriculum from scratch and have limited textbooks. My school's goal is to send all of our students to college. We work very hard to create meaningful and enjoyable worksheets and lessons. I spend many many hours outside of class preparing my lessons by searching the web and collaborating with other teachers because I don't have many teacher resource books. In our classroom, I am determined to create a curriculum that uses worksheets and hands on activities instead of textbook exercises. I am a first year teacher and have minimal resources. I have found that learning, especially math, is much more meaningful if the children can manipulate something or work with something tangible in their hands. My class has worked really hard to make math meaningful and clearly conceptualized. I don't want my kids to act as robots and only memorize formulas, I want them to understand the thought process and show them strategies to solve equations. With the aid of teacher resource books, I could create many more meaningful and leveled activities. Also, having manipulatives to supplements our lessons would allow the students to have a better understanding and vision of what we are studying. For example when we are learning how to find the area and perimeter of a cube or solid figure, we used Kleenex boxes for lack of a better material, but to have material that we could use every year would be wonderful. We are studying many other concepts that we don't have tools for, such as, fractions, angles, division and multiplication. My students have fallen in love with math and I would love to improve and expand the tools I am supplying them with. I am planting the seed of the love of math in my students and they are flourishing. Your contribution to our classroom would affect and support my students in so many ways and their math growth as a result of your kindness will last their entire lifetime.
