Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds, with 64% of the students being Hispanic, with non-English speaking families. Many of the students are bilingual, especially if they have been enrolled in school in the US since PreK. I do have students that are new the country and have no English. I work in a Title I school, where we offer 100% free breakfast and lunch daily for our students. I also apply for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable grant each year so that the students will receive a healthy snack 3-4 days a week. Many of the students receive food backpacks on Friday so they have food for the weekend.

The students love coming to school and are eager to learn.

The students are well behaved and thrive in our classroom community. They are supportive of each other in the classroom and on the playground. The parents are supportive and want to learn new ways to be engaged and involved with their child's education.

My Project

My school is located in an impoverished community, where there is limited exposure to art. Although students love art class in school, there are very few, if any murals in their neighborhoods. With an opportunity to collaborate with an experienced artist depicting something related to history, students will gain self-confidence as an artist and have a connection to history that they will forever remember.

Student groups will propose the best possible images that reflect either a local, state, or national historical event, explain the lasting importance and campaign for the group's image, and vote as a class on the best image that they feel will have a lasting impact on them and future students that attend our school.

Students will have an opportunity to go through the democratic process of voting and then proceed forward with the outcome of the election as a unified group.

The collaboration with the artist will give my students pride in their own capabilities as artists while presenting opportunities that many young people are frequently denied due to financial restrictions.
