My Project
Many struggling readers are forced to read classroom texts written by men in the 1800s to early 1900s. These novels are difficult for them to read, along with the students not being able to identify with the plot or characters of the story. By having students read more modern day works they can relate to, students will become more motivated and more interested to read. A LONG WAY DOWN by Jason Reynolds is a perfect book for my struggling readers. Not only is it written in verse, which will appeal to reluctant readers who get overwhelmed with large paragraphs, but it is also a captivating read. With this book, students will enhance their inferential reading comprehension skills while analyzing the Hero's Journey concept, along with the power of fear and revenge. Having a class set of this novel will be able to provide inner-city students a reading experience that some can relate to, in a modern day setting, and still get a higher level of instruction that they deserve.
