My Students

My classroom is full of fifth graders who are eager to learn and succeed. Even though all these students are the same age, their skills and needs greatly differ. I teach in Utah, a state that is known to have high numbers of students in each classroom. Not only do I have high numbers in my class, but I also have a diverse group of learners.

I have students who function well below grade level in reading and math; I also have students who work well above grade level.

I have students who have a passion for learning, and some who are disconnected from academics. My students come from culturally diverse backgrounds; many students are English Language Learners. To compound challenges, many students are economically disadvantaged.

My Project

A Long Walk to Water is a novel with a very important message about never giving up! The novel is written from two characters' perspectives about their journey in war-torn Sudan. My students will read the text to learn about the social injustice of poverty and the struggles people face while living in a country that is economically poor and in a war. Students will make connections to several current events and this novel.

Children who develop a love for reading become lifelong learners, and that is what I would like for my students.

Sometimes reading that novel that touches your heart and changes you as a person is just what you need to discover the magic of reading. This novel has that kind of power and magic.
