My students come to school ready to learn and compete, but many do not have the materials they need to succeed.
The problem is our school district is high poverty.
Many students do not have the necessary supplies, resources, or support needed for success. Our school district has limited funds available to classroom teachers. DonorsChoose.org has become a staple, providing much-needed resources to ensure my students have the items needed for classroom success and beyond. Without these projects, my urban students would not have what they need to prepare for high school and college.
My students are shocked when reading A Long Walk to Water. They can't believe that children must walk for 8 hours a day to get water. They are horrified to learn about the adversities that children must overcome just to have drinking water. This book touches their hearts.
I assign this book each year as an independent read.
I need additional books to replace those that have been damaged. This book is powerful and allows for great class discussions on compassion and tolerance for all. It allows my students to realize that we all need to do our part to make our world a better place.
