My Students

When is the last time you read a book that made you want to get up and change the world? Well, after my 7th graders read A Long Walk to Water, by L. Park they will be both grateful for the fresh water they drink freely each day, and motivated to raise money to help build a well in Sudan!

My 100 English/Language Arts students are a wonderful and diverse group of 7th graders that attend a small-town Title One middle school, with about an 80 percent free and reduced lunch rate.

Many of my student's families would find it difficult to purchase this novel that will truly change their way of looking at the world. Please consider helping my students refine their literacy skills while learning about the world they live in, and empowering them to make a positive difference in Sudan.

My Project

I plan to teach the book, A Long Walk to Water, in all four of my 7th grade English-Language Arts classes. The text is based on a true story of Salva Dut, a Sudanese refugee that now spends his life raising money to build freshwater wells in the Sudan. The book shows that with a well, lives of Sudanese children are immensely richer, because instead of having to walk hours and hours to a water source, they can attend school and become literate themselves. After reading, writing, and discussing the novel I will empower my students to use their literacy skills to create a team fundraising project, with all proceeds going to Mr. Dut's organization "water for sudan." Not only will my students learn literacy skills and cross-curricular connections between my class and their Social Studies class. Students will learn to be grateful for all the opportunities and resources they have as they use their energies and creativity to help others around the world.

Your donations will make a difference not just for the literacy development of my students, but will help students understand that they DO have many things to be thankful for, and that even though they are children, they can work together to make a difference in the lives of others.

Finally, through donating funds for my students to read the book, A Long Walk to Water, and then raise funds for a well to be built in Sudan, you are helping the people in Sudan become free in so many ways too!
