A Live Performance of Pete the Cat... Yes, Please!
Help me give my students the experience of a live arts performance. I would love for to be able to make a connection between their classroom learning and live arts that we do not get much exposure to.
My students are in an on-sight, public pre-k classroom in a K-5 school. I have 28 students and we are the only pre-k class in the building. My class is specifically for at-risk students. All of my students come from either parent who do not speak English as their first language, single-parent homes or homes in which parents work more than one job, or receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
Each child in my classroom is fearless when it comes to learning.
They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn!
Teaching pre-k, especially for at-risk students, can be both challenging and rewarding and sometimes at the same time. The biggest hurdle that I have to overcome is making sure I have supplies and hands-on materials because this is how the majority of students at this age learn. We work on academics, social and emotional skills, and fine/gross motor skills equally.
Our program gives children from all cultures, areas, and various incomes an opportunity to learn and thrive within the district.
My Project
This trip would completely make the day of 28 littles who just adore Pete the Cat. This project is for a field trip to go see Pete the Cat Live. The performance is at a smaller but well-know theatre that allows the kids up close and personal experience.
One of the most important skills for pre-readers is telling a story from the pictures and these kiddos know their Pete the Cat!
I chose to focus some of the pre-reading skills needed (since the beginning of the year) around the Pete the Cat stories to give students fun and engaging retell knowledge to start their path to reading. The Pete stories are not only colorful and interactive but the provide just the right amount of details to students to identify but not be overwhelmed. Pete has really been the reason some of these kiddos are so much more confident in picking up a book!
