My Students
In my classroom, we continue to adapt, change and innovate while preparing our students for twenty-first century careers. From coding with Scratch and Kano to inventing with MakeyMakey, students are excited to learn at every turn. The next step is to keep expanding our Makerspace and invent with LittleBits.
Our school is a melting pot of diverse students, both ethnically and academically.
While our STEM classes are one of the more popular programs, we struggle to attract girls into STEM. We started a “Girls in STEM” initiative and our numbers have been steadily growing. We need to motivate more people to inspire and encourage girls to pursue classes and careers in STEM. Let’s work together and encourage girls at a young age to explore the areas of STEM by supporting curriculum such as LittleBits, that keep complex topics “tech” simple, and above all, fun!
In my classes, students are always finding new and innovative ways to interact with the world. Whether we are building rockets and Kano computers in 6th, inventing controllers and building robots in 7th or coding and designing video games for virtual reality in 8th, there is something for everyone to explore their passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
My Project
All of the LittleBits resources purchased will be used in our seventh and eighth grade curricula as well as our after school STEM program for grades six through eight. With the smart, cloud based, Arduino and synth kits, we will be able to expand our coding and Makerspace activities to real-world applications. Our students will be able to take a hands-on approach and create tangible inventions with LittleBits to work in conjunction with programs they've coded. Coding in the classroom has been wonderful, and using MakeyMakeys has been invaluable, but my students are ready for the next step. We plan on creating a showcase where our students turn the school library into an interactive Makerspace exhibit. They will not only showcase their inventions, but also share their code and design plans with other students across all grades in our school. Support our growing Makerspace, opening the path for my students to become the inventors of tomorrow.
Please support our STEM Makerspace and help challenge our students in fun and exciting ways!
Having a hands-on approach to STEM has helped us tremendously with attracting girls into STEM. Girls’ perspectives are just as vital as boys'. Let’s work together to promote equality of genders in STEM. It starts with how we choose to approach STEM in the classroom, and LittleBits can help bridge the gap. Let’s work together to inspire the next generation of women in STEM!
