This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach physical education and health. My students are active and require exercise equipment to be able to obtain physical fitness and heart health. I teach in a Title I high school with around 730 students in grades 9-12. Sixty percent of these students receive free and reduced cost lunches. Due to a lack of school funding, physical education equipment is very difficult to obtain. A majority of the students are athletes and health conscious students requiring the necessary equipment to continue their passion for sports and fitness.
My Project
These resources are needed in the PE class to encourage teamwork, cooperation and fitness skills. Table tennis involves hand-eye coordination and cardiovascular workouts. This project was inspired by students' request to play table tennis but tables currently located in the gym are broken or unsafe for play. Students will play single and doubles games/tournaments during a 90 minute block in conjunction with other net games. Table tennis will motivate students to move and compete. At this age good sportsmanship is learned through friendly completion amongst peers. Table tennis promotes physical fitness activity, fun and peer to peer learning all at the same time.
