This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are coming from all different cultures and diverse backgrounds. Most of my students come from Vietnam, Mexico, and Middle Eastern countries. The makeup of our students are 85% socio-economically disadvantaged, 62% English language learners, 50% Hispanic, 40% Asian, 10% White/other, and 15% students with disabilities. My students are coming from homes that presents many challenges- low income, multi- families living in one home, 2 parents working full time, broken homes with divorced parents, and families that are partly living here and partly living in another country.
Today more than ever, my diverse students need support with developing social and emotional skills alongside of their academic skills.
Many of my students are tired, stressed out, have anger issues, or are depressed. My classroom is their "safe and happy place."
"A Little SPOT" books, posters, and emotional plushies will be used and displayed in my classroom. These items will help my students to learn how to identify a wide range of feelings and emotions which can help a child show empathy, self control, and to be more self aware. As students become self aware of their feelings, they will be able to build their self esteem and confidence to be able to talk with others about how they are feeling.
