This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach an incredible group of elementary students with special needs in Hemet, California; Every student is unique, creative, and full of potential—and like all young learners, they’re growing not only academically but emotionally, too. To help them navigate big feelings and develop the social-emotional skills they need for life, I am creating a calm, inviting SEL corner in our classroom.

To bring this vision to life, I’m requesting the A Little SPOT SEL curriculum by Diane Alber, including the full set of books, matching plush emotion "SPOT" stuffed animals, and vocabulary cards.

This resource is highly visual, accessible, and relatable—perfect for my students who benefit from visual supports and consistent routines. These tools will help them identify their emotions, learn calming strategies, and build empathy, resilience, and self-awareness.

What We Need:

-A Little SPOT book sets focusing on emotions, confidence, kindness, and coping skills

-A Little SPOT plush stuffed animals to create hands-on emotional learning experiences

-SEL vocabulary cards and visuals for our classroom SEL board

-A comfortable space where students can go to reflect, reset, or check in with how they're feeling

Why It Matters:

In a special education classroom, SEL isn’t just a bonus—it’s a daily necessity. My students may face challenges with communication, regulation, and peer interactions, and the A Little SPOT resources will give them language and tools to express themselves in healthy ways. This dedicated SEL space will also support behavior regulation, reduce anxiety, and encourage positive relationships across our school day.
