This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In our community, students lack access to basic musical instruments. Most have seen orchestral instruments online or on YouTube, but not up close. Others have not had any exposure to music other than what's heard on the radio.

In recent years, the school had problems with too many instruments getting mistreated and not enough money in the budget to fix or replace them.

As a former student of this middle school, it gives me great joy to come back and give my time to teach these students about my first love: music. There is no greater joy than the look on a student's face when they can finally hit that first note on their instrument.

My Project

The materials I am asking for will benefit my students' musical experience. Most of them have never had music as a class, so many are excited to learn a new skill.

It is refreshing to see students walk in everyday with a positive attitude about learning.

Many others have family and friends in local bands and I'd love for them to leave my class with more of an understanding of how much work it takes to be a musician. It is also important to me to get these materials as a previous alumni of this school's music department! Any little bit of help will go a long way.

For example, stools! We need stools for our now 6 bassists that are in the beginning strings class. Currently, we only have enough stools for two of them to sit on, so they've had to stand. Also, many of the violins that are in the wings waiting to be played are lacking bridges. Once those bridges are set up, more students can pick up a new instrument to learn.
