When you think of a rural school, you probably picture our students. They wear hats, drive trucks, and say yes ma'am. They also don't get out much; few of our students visit outside of the county for anything other than sports. They are great kids who have very little exposure to the outside world. Our community is like an island. If we do not bring it in, it won't be available to us.
Bringing the world to my students is very important to me!
As a small campus, we have a small budget. We do not have a lot of technology or even a football team (in Texas!) What we do have are students who are eager to learn and experience all that the world has to offer. As the future leaders of our community, these kids need to be exposed to diverse viewpoints and new life experiences.
My Project
My students study The Great Gatsby and the time period. We read it at the same time that they study the roaring 20s in U.S. History. This murder mystery experience lets the kids unwind and learn at the same time.
We use our knowledge and inferencing skills to solve a murder - set within a party at Gatsby's mansion.
It is a memorable experience, but will be much more exciting with a better setting. These supplies, costumes, props, decorations and coloring books, will help us set the scene, and will help the students become more familiar with fashions of the time. Hopefully, students will be able to emulate the fashions presented in the pages of coloring books! We encourage them to dress up and really get into their characters.
