A Little Love Can Go a Long Way

Help me give my students the supplies they need to be successful. I tasked a student with collecting data from her peers on what they need to be successful and backpacks were at the top of the list.

My Students

I work in an inner-city school where students struggle with everything from having what they need at home, having adequate transportation to school, and having what they need to succeed in school.

Many of my students feel disconnected from the school and their education; this is only made worse when they don't have the things they need to succeed when they get into the classroom.

My students are lively and animated and enjoy learning; they want to learn, but they can't focus on learning when they are worried about all of the things they don't have. Providing students with the basic supplies they need to function in a classroom setting will give them the boost they need for a strong finish.

My Project

When students walk into their classes the first task they are given is a DoNow. When students don't have a pen or paper to complete this task they experience their first setback of the period. When they also lack folders and backpacks, they are forced to leave assignments in their lockers, with friends, or in a classroom and hope to get it back the next day. In many cases, their work goes missing or the person holding it does not come to class and once again they experience another setback.

Many of my students lost all of their school materials early in the year due to an abnormal amount of rain.

Our students must walk to and from school; we had several days where the heavy rains coincided with the end of the school day and the supplies in their backpacks, and in several cases, the backpacks themselves, disintegrated. These materials are not easy for our students to replace and when they are constantly facing setbacks in the classroom they quickly disengage.

When I asked my students to generate a list of items they need to be successful, I was not surprised that backpacks and folders were at the top of the list. Only after they listed the basic supplies needed in a classroom did they branch out and ask for manipulatives. This conversation, held with several classes, confirmed how much our students want to learn, and how much they struggle to be prepared.
