A Little Library for Little Minds

My students need 45 more books in our classroom library so they are able to read literature they will enjoy, which will help foster a love for reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Sitting down in the classroom library should be something students look forward to everyday. When pictures are faded in books and the story has no connection to their lives, students are not interested in reading.

My students are fantastic 4-year-olds.

They are energetic and enthusiastic. They have a genuine love for the world around them and deserve to be given every opportunity the world has to offer. Many of my students are the first in their families to attend schools in the United States. They attend school in a low-income area highly populated with recent immigrants from Hispanic backgrounds, most coming from Central America. The majority of my students speak Spanish as a first language. My students are very smart and, though it sometimes takes a little coaxing, they are all hard workers who will someday have a large impact on the world if they are pushed to reach their full potential.

My Project

Last year when I gave my students books in their backpacks to take home for the summer many of them told me it was the only book they had at home. Right now my classroom library is very barren. My classroom was opened late last year to house a number of wait listed Pre-Kindergarten students, which meant I got whatever books were left over after all of the other classrooms had already started. This didn't leave me with many books, let alone quality books. The books I am asking for would not only provide my students with quality literature to be engaged with, it would also help my create an environment where students learn to love the books they are reading. By the end of the year I can hope that my students leave being able to read, but more important than that, I hope that my students are able to leave the classroom with a love for books. If they love books, they will continue reading and that can only help ensure they will be successful for years after leaving my classroom.

In our classroom every time we finish a book, we give it a hug because we love the books we read.

I want to be able to provide my students with a larger variety of books they can read that they will relate to and learn to love. The more they love books, the more they will read. The more variety of books they have, the more well rounded they will be. I want my students to have the opportunity to read a lot of books, learn to love them, and continue to be readers for the rest of their lives.
