My Students
Teaching children in one of the most expensive cities in the country brings many unusual challenges. We currently have a disproportionate district system of school funding that is generously being supplemented by corporate donations. My students are not among the most socially or economically disadvantaged in my city, so they are often ignored. It is my experience that if kids can do anything if you give them the right tools. It is, therefore, my job to get them what they need to succeed.
My Project
The past. American history. Difficult subjects for difficult times.
My students need more great non-fiction subject matter to read.
I know that history, (particularly U.S. history,) is one area that they seem to get excited about. Reading about the feeding habits of the wombat has its benefits. However, if you are 9 years old, you need more.
I want to provide some interesting reading experiences that encourage my students' natural curiosity, and promote their love of history. We are moving into the study of non-fiction text. I do not have enough historical titles to provide a good variety of text models for my students to access. They will discuss, compare, and contrast each others' opinions, and in this way the reading experience will be different and far more rich and beneficial. The clothespins will help display essays and/or projects the kids will create based on the texts.
