I teach science to elementary-school students, and one of the aspects of science that my students love the most is Earth Science, where they get to put their hands and seeds in soil and watch an amazing thing happen--flowers and plants growing. This year I am hoping to create a "little bit of heaven" at P.S. 50. I hope to do this by having the children grow not only flowers and plants but vegetables that they can take home and taste. My students range in age from seven to twelve and are very excited at the prospect of having their very own garden, one that they can nurture and grow themselves. I would like to start this by growing some of these plants indoors where the children will have ready access to the garden. To make this project possible, I am requesting funding to purchase a Portable Science Habitat from Insect Lore. This spacious 18” X 18” X 18” enclosure can be used for growing plants, as an aquarium, or as a temporary home to any variety of small animals. The large chamber rests comfortably on a heavy-duty support system with locking casters. Having the garden on wheels will help me to share it with the younger children who are in the kindergarten classes and do not have the pleasure of coming to the science lab. This will be an incredible, new experience for all of our children. I would also like to purchase from Insect Lore some butterfly caterpillars and ladybugs. Being able to see the life cycle of the butterfly and ladybugs and how they interact with nature is an experience that the students would not otherwise have. The students have been bringing in all kinds of seeds and bulbs for springtime planting. They are awaiting anxiously to begin planting. Please help me to give them this wonderful and new experience. Please help fund this wonderful project. A Little Bit of Heaven Here on earth I will do my part PS 50's the place To give us this fresh new start. Colors so bold Green, red, and gold Flowers, peppers, tomatoes and spices Will make our lives so much nicer. Give me soil and I will toil Till this land Is no more bland. I will work from seven to seven Until my students experience A little bit of heaven!
