My students need access to engaging young adult books to read while in ISS about people who learn from mistakes and are determined never to make the same mistake twice.
I work at a high school in the suburbs of a large city in Texas with a student population of more than 3,500. In an area where many were impacted by Hurricane Harvey ans many of the local libraries had severe damage as well. This donation will contribute to the lives of a wide range of students who have imposed consequences for their actions but still need to be engaged in intellectual activity while at school.
These students especially need access to engaging young adult books to read outside of the classroom to help grow their reading stamina and make connections to characters they can relate to and characters that will help them understand the world around them.
These are the students who need the most academic support because they are missing valuable classroom instruction. They need to read stories of successful people who learn from mistakes and are determined never to make the same mistake twice. The punishment for the student should come in the form of isolation from his/her peers, not pointless assignments. All of the English teachers on campus provide credit for productive reading done outside of the classroom and this would give them access to the books they need.
My Project
When a student finds themselves making bad choices, they end up with consequences that remove them from the classroom. They are often the same students that need to be in the room the most. These students especially need access to engaging young adult books to read outside of the classroom to help grow their reading stamina and make connections to characters they can relate to and characters that will help them understand the world around them.
All of the English teachers on campus provide credit for productive reading done outside of the classroom but these students don't always have easy access to these types of books or the experience to find the kind of book that can impact them in a real way.
By choosing books that are interesting and that can make connections to their own lives, students can actively work on literary skills and make the most of their time outside of the classroom.
