My Students
As a third-grade teacher at a Title I school in Utah, I have the privilege of working with a fantastic group of students. Not only are my students smart and driven, but they are courageous and kind. I find that they teach me something new every day.
Most of my third-grade students come from low-income homes.
These students go home and do not own books or literacy materials. Therefore, it is my utmost goal in my teaching career to provide my students with the best and most comprehensive reading instruction possible, while still instilling a love of reading and writing. My students love books and love writing! However, half of my class is reading and writing well below a third-grade level, and for some, we have a two-grade level gap to close.
My Project
In third grade we work a lot with new mathematical ideas. New ideas to students consist of multiplication, division, fractions and area. These new concepts require hands-on learning to help students solidify learning. In our classroom we had a plastic rolling cart to help organize all of our math manipulatives. Unfortunately, due to heavy use by students, the wheels have broken off of our cart and made it unable to stand.
This tool box is strong enough to withstand the constant opening and closing of drawers, and create space for mathematical thinking on top.
This toolbox will specifically create a space to store and use unifix cubes, base 10 blocks, fraction bars, tiles for area, money, and so much more. In addition to storing these items students will have a space to work on top of it.
