A Literacy Refuge for Newcomer Teens

Help me give my students a sanctuary where literacy becomes a bridge to hope and belonging.

My Project

My students are resilient and full of potential. They are English language learners—many newly arrived in the United States—who bring with them incredible life experiences, strength, and determination. Some are navigating school while working jobs, parenting, or adjusting to a new culture far from home.

What I admire most is the courage it takes to start over in a new country, in a new language, and still show up ready to learn.

These students are learners, dreamers, and builders of new futures. They deserve a classroom that feels safe, welcoming, and calm—one that reflects how much their stories matter.

My goal is to support their academic growth in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, while also fostering their confidence, sense of identity, and connection to our school community. This reading space is one step toward creating that kind of classroom.

Soft rug, bean bags, and a lamp will create a calm, cozy reading nook where students can relax and focus, especially important for those carrying stress or coming to school after long shifts.

Bookshelves will help keep materials organized and accessible, encouraging students to engage with reading on their own terms.

Noise-canceling headphones will help students block out distractions and focus during reading, independent learning, or moments when they need quiet—a small but powerful tool for creating peace in a busy school day.

This space will become a sanctuary where literacy becomes a bridge to healing, growth, and belonging. Every item will be used with care and preserved for future students.

Note: A separate project will provide the diverse reading materials that will bring this space to life. Thank you for helping us build it step by step!
