My students need books on CD and portable CD players so that struggling readers and English language learners can participate in literature circles with their peers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Students come to my classroom every year with a wide range of reading abilities, from first grade level to sixth grade level, and everything in between. They all need to feel successful and be able to participate in discussions with their peers about books read at their grade level.
My students are a warm, loving, social bunch of individuals.
Most of them greet me each day with a hug. Because they are social children who learn easily from each other, our day is structured to provide lots of partner and group interaction.
The majority of my students are English language learners who come from economically disadvantaged homes where literacy rates are low. Most of their parents do not speak English, and many of them are not able to read or write in their native language as well. As a result, my students' early literacy experiences are extremely limited and the range of literacy levels in my classes is very wide. The children live and go to school in a racially and linguistically segregated, inner city, neighborhood. Many of them have never traveled outside of this neighborhood, unless attending school field trips.
My Project
In order to become fluent readers, all children, but especially English language learners and struggling readers, need to have a lot of experiences hearing fluent reading. I read out loud to them every day, but it is not enough. I want to build a classroom listening library composed of books on CD and portable CD players so that my students have the opportunity to hear fluent reading while they are simultaneously reading independently. Doing so will have several positive effects on my students' achievement, including (but definitely not limited to):
1. becoming more fluent readers
2. gaining a broader vocabulary
3. learning to love reading instead of seeing it as a constant struggle
4. increasing their self-esteem as they are able to read the same texts as their more advanced peers
5. being able to participate in heterogeneous reading groups based on reading interest instead of reading levels
6. increased reading comprehension
This project, building a classroom listening library, will impact my students where they need it most: increased reading skills.
Having low reading skills affects so many other aspects of a student's life. It is connected to poor writing, math, and science skills, low test scores, low self-esteem, low motivation, and limited choices for the future. Being able to listen to books as they are reading them will be a highly engaging and motivating way to make a positive difference in their lives.
