I teach English as a second language at the Urban Science Academy (M.S. 325) in the Bronx. My students' English proficiency levels vary from beginners to proficient speakers who need to improve their reading and writing skills. Because of space issues in our school, I currently share a classroom with two other teachers, so there are usually three different classes going on at the same time. Each teacher will have a group of about three to ten students at a time. Our classroom also doubles as the office for the literacy coach and the Academic Intervention Specialist for literacy. Needless to say, our classroom is a high-traffic, high-energy area. Since listening is a major part of the ESL curriculum, it is important for my classes to have a listening center so they can listen to books on tape, speeches, and other audio while not disturbing the other classes. The major components of a listening center are a cassette player/boom box, a multi-jack hook-up, and headsets for multiple students. The center allows several students to listen to the same material and read along with what they are listening to. Such a listening center would increase the efficacy of our listening lessons, which we have at least once a week, and would help the students improve listening skills that are greatly needed. I would like a listening center that will allow at least eight students to listen to the same audio at the same time. Thank you for considering this proposal.
