My students need books and a place to store their books outside of a desk. The rug will give them a place to sit and read with a partner. It also matches my nautical classroom theme.

My Students
I have a great group of first grade students. They are eager to learn and grow this year. The families where I am from don’t all have access to books or learning materials at home. I have some students that are already reading and some that are just beginning to use letter sounds to recognize words. This group has mixed interests, abilities, and goals to work towards. The effort of my students is outstanding. They are all willing to grow.
My Project
I want to spark a love for reading in my students this year. Having a cozy and welcoming place to call their own will hopefully do the trick! I would love to give them a reading area they deserve. I want to provide them with a space they can keep a book in the classroom. We currently do not have a School Library, so they are only able to use what is in my classroom for books. I was gifted with many books from the teacher who taught in the room before me. However, I don't have a lot of books involving their interests.
With choices like Junie B.
Jones, Henry and Mudge, and several other books that pertain to current interests of that of 6 and 7 year olds, I am confident they won't be able to wait for partner reading! I asked for 10 drawer rolling carts for students to store a book they just can't put down and want to save for next time! I also plan to use these for book suggestions.
