A Library with Books Featuring Diverse Cultures, Backgrounds, and Identities
Help me give my students a diverse classroom library so they can see themselves in the stories they read, feel a sense of belonging, and grow in empathy by learning about others' experiences.

My Project
As a fifth-grade teacher, I want to build a classroom library where every student can see themselves in the books they read. When kids find characters who look like them, speak like them, or go through similar experiences, it helps them feel seen and valued. It shows them that their stories matter and that they belong. A diverse library also creates a welcoming space where students can feel proud of who they are and connect with others in meaningful ways.
Just as important, I want my students to read about people and experiences that are different from their own.
Books can open up new perspectives and help kids build empathy and understanding. Whether it’s learning about different cultures, abilities, or family dynamics, reading diverse stories helps students grow into thoughtful, curious, and caring individuals. By filling our shelves with a wide range of voices, I hope to spark conversations, inspire curiosity, and help my students see the beauty in both themselves and others.
