A Library to Help Us Learn About Each Other

My students need books that will teach them about how we can celebrate each others' differences. They need books at their independent reading level so they can work together as they read.

My Students

My kindergartners and first graders will be working hard on learning to read, write, be part of a global community, and more every day. Our school is an international school. We have two target languages, Spanish and Mandarin. My students spend half of their day in my literacy class, which is taught in English, and the other half in math and science, which is taught in their target language. It is one of my goals to deliver a curriculum to my students that speaks to the whole child.

It is important that everyone starts to learn how to navigate what is going on in the world from a young age.

I believe that being armed with a diverse library will help me to teach my students how to make sense of the world around them. Books bring the world to my students. Literature opens the eyes of my students to the experiences, beliefs, and causes of individuals all around the world.

My Project

The books in this project will help me to build a curriculum where we continue to learn about the world. I carefully chose each book with a specific teaching point in mind. These lessons will center on how we can celebrate each other's differences, find commonalities with each other, and learn to work together to make the world a better place. They will help us to learn to problem solve more effectively. They will help my students to see their true value, and to reflect upon ways they can share those values and talents with the world.

These books will help students learn from each other - they will help them to see how we are all part of a community made up of many different kinds of people, and celebrate how wonderfully fantastic that is.

We will be able to share our own experiences through these read aloud lessons. We will be able to build upon these lessons and weave them in with the rest of our day so that we are able to constantly think about what we can learn from one another. It is my hope that these lessons and discussions will lead to us taking action in order to make our community a better place to be in. These action steps will start in our classroom, and build out into the school, our neighborhood, our city, and beyond.
