This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I serve a lively group of students with a variety of special needs ranging from learning disabilities to developmental delays. Nothing gets them more excited than hands-on activities where they can cut, paste, or build, or interact with the teacher as a team. The looks on their faces when they feel confident in the strategies that they've learned never gets old. While our school has an increasing number of students living in poverty, they still come to school excited about learning.
My Project
This is part 2 of my goal of building a classroom library that my students and I can call our own. In my short few years of teaching children with special needs, I have served students in multiple settings. Whether it is co-teaching, collaborative, or a resource room, I have shared a learning space with some of the most wonderful teachers at my school. This past school year, however, I've been afforded my very own classroom for my students. But I'm missing one important element: a classroom library!
This new classroom library will allow my students to easily access literature within their own learning space.
The book series listed were chosen with my students in mind, based on their interests and what I've seen many of them gravitate towards. Graphic novels, like the popular Captain Underpants and Dog Man series, have ignited students' interest in and love of reading. Many of the students I serve are emergent (and reluctant) readers and are often underwhelmed with the books that are considered to be on their reading level. Reading graphic novels will give them a sense of accomplishment and build their confidence while strengthening their inference, sequencing and reading comprehension skills.
