This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a neighborhood school with many families living within two miles. My students are a joy to teach. We are a Title I school, and the boys and girls represent a diverse population. All the students enjoy library classes once per week. I do a variety of literacy and technology as our primary focus in the library, and students get so excited to learn new things in different and unique ways.
The majority of my students do not speak English at home.
They are all enrolled in our English language learners program. Even though they are learning a new language, they work hard and enjoy learning new things in different ways. The students enjoyed reviewing our literature collection each week. Students LOVED to have similar books grouped together. Our system has our shelves organized by the classic Dewey Decimal System.
My Project
I teach kindergarten to 5th grade in a high-poverty, inner-city school district. Our school has a nice library that the students love to visit. We devote time during our library visits to selecting library books to read that are JUST WRIGHT. They spend a lot of time looking for books similar to the one they checked out and enjoyed the previous week.
My students need rolling carts for our library to sort similar books together for easy access.
The library collection is divided into four major groups. Easy picture books and fiction are in ABC order by the author's last name. Non-fiction books are in numerical order using the Dewey Decimal System. Our biographies are in ABC order according to the featured person's last name. This can be VERY confusing when students are looking for a book that is JUST RIGHT.
The rolling book carts would allow the students and I to sort similar books together. They contain six different bins that have a label slot. Donations to this project would help organize our library for the students. They would be able to find a book that was JUST RIGHT for themselves a lot easier with these rolling library carts.
