Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach in a Title 1 school where many students come from low-income homes and face challenges that no child should experience. My students enter my classroom with a bright smile ready to take on the day because I make it known that they are special and can accomplish anything when they work hard! I teach my students to be thinkers, questioners, and talker.

Our classroom motto is, "If you can dream it, you can achieve it!" I strive to create a classroom environment where no idea is to big.

Every student feels as though they are valuable and their voices are heard. Despite all of the hardships that my students face at home, they love coming to school to learn and create because they know that our classroom is a safe place for them to grow.

My Project

My students need books that have characters in them that they can relate to. The more they see realistic stories that tell about people of their culture, the more they will be inspired to read. My students works hard to build their stamina, but they often have a hard time finding books that truly interest them. I also believe that having comfortable wobble stools will create an inviting reading environment. The new books and seating will help to grow their love of literature tremendously.

Creating a library filled with African Americans and titles such as Miami Jackson Makes the Play, and Let the Children March will not only inspire my students to love literature, but also to build a sense of pride behind their culture.

Many of my students only read books at school, so it is important for me to introduce them to African American literature and show them how important it is to create a comfortable environment that makes them want to read often.

I will set the tone in class and hope that they go home and begin creating their own reading sanctuary so that they will want to read daily.
