Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are smart, creative, and community-minded. They are interested and curious about the world around them. They want to understand why the inequities exist in our society, so that they can figure out how to challenge and transform our society. Many of my students are multilingual learners who want to develop their reading, writing, and speaking skills in English.
While my students face many challenges, they have high hopes for their futures and many of them will be the first in their families to attend college.
They amaze me with the many ways they are able to do so much with few resources.
We are a Title I school, so we need a lot of extra resources, especially if we want to order supplies or class sets of books. A high percentage of students receive free and reduced-price lunch, so it is also another financial burden for families to purchase extra books and supplies.
My Project
I want to build a more robust classroom library for my students. My students will grow as readers, if they read everyday. Pairing students with a book that is both engaging and at their reading level can be a challenge, so I have chosen books that are high interest, culturally relevant, and accessible to them.
My students need books that reflect their diverse backgrounds and experiences.
I want them to be able to see themselves in the books they read. My hope is that they will fall in love with reading because they were able to find the "just right book".
