Most classroom libraries around the city are sparse and outdated. They house the same books throughout the grades and often the students are forced to read books they have already read, or choose the other disconcerting option: stop reading. My kids are eighth graders are really excited about reading (thanks to a maxed out VISA :), but my library can't support their growing love of the written word. Our school doesn't have a library, so my classroom is most often their only source of books. There are so many wonderful books out there, with new, intriguing, fantastic, socially relevant titles coming out daily. I often check the new teen titles at Barnes and Noble and want to cry wishing that I could afford to buy all the books they would love. My goal is to create a new "wing" for my library where my students can check out totally new texts. I hope to purchase about fifty books from authors like Laurie Halse Anderson, Stephenie Meyer, David Levithan, Joan Bauer and countless others. The goal for students in my class is to become lifelong learners and the first step in creating minds like those is to spark their curiosity, their passions. Please help me to do that!
