Help me give my students a theatre library, including classics such as Shakespeare, Chekhov, and Sophocles
as well as modern plays by diverse playwrights to prepare them for professional and college auditions.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hard working, artistically minded, passionate high school theatre kids! When given challenging material or a quick rehearsal period, they excel and impress. I'm continuously amazed with their ability to collaborate with one another and put aside their differences or personal feelings to create something beautiful.
My students yearn to be among professional theatre performers and makers, but often feel they don't have the necessary tools or materials to prepare a standout audition.
My school is located in the Bronx and many of our students live at or below the poverty line. Students' family members are working two or three jobs to continue to support their children, while some students are coming from shelters or foster care.
At school, they are equals. No matter what neighborhood they're coming from or home situation, they come to our performing arts high school to put in the work, perform meaningful theatre and prepare for a career in the performing arts or a related field.
My Project
My students choose to go to our specific high school because it's a specialized theatre school. Many of them hope to have careers as actors, performers or theatre makers of some sort. In order to prepare for college programs and professional auditions, my students must have an understanding of theatre history and the plays that make up the classical theatre canon.
A play library will allow my students to better understand classical and contemporary works and also prepare them to choose audition material from well-known and new plays that they have read.
I love the idea of my students using a theatre library on their own and entering my classroom just to search for a particular play for a project, audition, or research paper. Plays can be hard to come by and I look forward to offering this resource to my students and many students to come!
