Not only am I a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, but a small town at that, with the largest city close to us being 2 hours away. I am the only art teacher in the elementary school and see every single student in the school every 4 days.
My students love art, but art class really is the only place where they get to experience art.
We are not near a city that has museums, or access to artistic experiences. Art class is their museum and their access to art mediums.
With that said, my students love art. They walk into my classroom every art class ready to learn and create. I am lucky enough to have a space to allow my students to explore, create and think outside of the box. And I'm lucky enough to have so many students that strive to learn as much as they can in the art room.
I would love to build a drawing library in my art room. I envision a place where students can go to look at pictures of everyday objects and learn how to draw those objects whenever they need the assistance. My drawing library will have drawing books of popular subjects along with clipboards. Students can take there work to the library space, have a seat on some cushions, and practice drawing on top of the clipboards using the art books. This will give my students an area where they are comfortable to learn, go, and make mistakes. They will then be able to go back to their artwork to create the final masterpiece.
