My Project
High school is hard. There is no way of denying it. Teenagers today are faced with new and unique challenges that most adults are struggling to understand, and outlets like social media have only seemed to make things harder. Novels can be a place where they can seek refuge, learn about other cultures, and deepen their awareness of the world around them. Some stories help them lose themselves for a little while, while others help them find themselves.
By funding this project, you would be granting hundreds of children the opportunity to travel the world that awaits them in each new book!
My goal is to have a library that gives all of my students the opportunity to escape the pressures of high school for a little while, but that also allows them to see themselves in the books they read. As a school counselor at one of the largest, most diverse high schools in Pennsylvania, I serve a group of amazing teenagers from all different cultures, academic levels, and lifestyles, many of whom have never read a book that featured a character that looks like them.
I believe the books on my list give ample opportunity for students from all walks of life and backgrounds to find the adventure and answers they crave. There is something for everyone! Because it is outside of a classroom setting, students are a bit more eager to read and discuss what they've read. I love hearing the excitement in their voices as they describe the stories from their own perspective and share their takeaways.
