Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a diverse community. Our school values center around curiosity and empathy and courage and integrity. My students reflect these values all the time in small and major ways.
Each kid has had a personal hill to climb, in addition to surviving a global pandemic during a turbulent time in this country's history.
At Morning Meeting we share and process our feelings and our ideas. We practice empathy and curiosity by engaging with tough topics and trusting students to be open and honest about their thoughts and feelings. This year has been so difficult for all students, and my third grade classes are no different.
My Project
You can't be what you can't see. Children need representation in their classrooms. By seeing faces that look like theirs, reading stories that resonate with their lived experiences, and learning about the many contributions that have sprung from their communities children are able to imagine their own bright futures. I am lucky to teach two subjects - ELA and Social Studies. The intersection of these two content areas gives me the opportunity to weave together the past behind us, the present we are building, and the future we can create.
